Mount Everest is the
highest mountain on earth and is located in the
Himalayan Mountains of Southern Asia. Its summit is
approximately 29,035 feet high and is located in Tibet.
The summit ridge of Mount Everest marks the border
between Tibet and Nepal. Mount Everest was named after
Sir George Everest, a British general surveyor of India,
who was
the first to record the height and location of Mount
Everest. In Nepal, Everest is known as
Sagarmatha,
which means goddess of the sky. And in Tibet it is known
as Chomolungma, which means mother goddess of the
universe.
Temperatures on Mount Everest never rise above freezing. January
is the coldest month, when the temperature
averages -30°F, but can
drop as low as -76°F. July is the warmest month on the
mountain at -2°F.
Though many had
tried before, the first to reach the summit were Tenzing
Norgay & Sir Edmund Percival Hillary of New Zealand
on
May 29, 1953. The first
American to make the ascent was James Whittaker on May
1,1963.
Kala
Pattar is a mountain peak in Khumbu, Nepal in the
Himalayan mountains. It is 18,192 feet high and is the
most accessible point to view Mount Everest from base
camp to peak. Due to its structure, Everest's peak cannot be viewed from its
base . Kala Pattar provides
spectacular views of Mount Everest on a sunny day. |
