This is a
beautiful portrait of moonrise over the Lincoln
Memorial. The Washington Monument and Capitol can be
seen in the background.
The Lincoln
Memorial is a memorial to the 16th United States
President, Abraham Lincoln, and was constructed in the
style of a classical Greek Doric temple. It has 36 columns
meant to represent the 36 states in the Union at the
time of Abraham Lincoln's death. The memorial contains a
large seated sculpture of Lincoln that was carved from
28 blocks of white Georgia marble. The monument
was dedicated by Warren G. Harding on May 30, 1922.
Inside,
Lincoln's second inaugural address is inscribed on the
North wall, and inscribed on the South wall is the
Gettysburg address. Above the 19 foot tall statue is
this dedication: "In this Temple, as in the hearts of
the people, for whom he saved the Union, the memory of
Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever".
