Seven Helpful Hints for a Happy Halloween

Jack-O-Laterns. Ghouls and ghosts. Bobbing for apples. Halloween is one of the most fun and interesting days of the year. Unfortunately for some, Halloween can also be a dangerous and potentially scary night. It doesn't have to be that way! With these seven tips, you can ensure that Halloween is an exciting, safe, and memorable night for you and your family.

1. Dress up. Even if your Halloween night simply consists of handing out candy to the neighborhood kids, there's no reason you can't do so in costume! Dressing up is part of the magic of the holiday. For one night a year you get to be someone you're not! Live it up and don you silliest or scariest duds for the evening.

2. Keep the sugar high to a sugar low. If you have kids, they're sure to come back at night with a bag full of tasty treats. One or two small candy bars is ok (after all, it is a special occasion), but keep in mind that your kids have probably already maxed out on sugar. It will be difficult for them to fall asleep if "one more piece" turns into three or four more pieces. The same goes for you! Do your munching before dinner instead of right before you go to bed.

3. Respect the opinions of others. Halloween isn't for everyone. In fact, there are a good number of people who actually will tell you that you're evil or wrong for celebrating the holiday. Avoid confrontations. Instead, simply tell them that you respect their opinion, but you disagree. Then, walk away.

4. Keep an open mind with kids. If your son wants to dress as a princess or your daughter wants to be a tomato. Kids are different. Let them be whatever they want to be.

5. Be safe. If your children will be out after dark, walk with them through the neighborhood. Do a through check of any treats, discarding homemade items from people you don't know. Make sure that costumes include reflectors or have your child carry a flashlight. When you keep everyone safe, you'll be well on your way to a happy Halloween.

6. Decorate. Nothing will help you get into the spirit more than a few pumpkins and some orange strings of lights! You can decorate you home, but don't forget your office space as well!

7. Consider hosting a party. If you don't want to go out for the night, why no invite everyone to your own home to keep you company? Halloween parties are certainly a lot of work, but they're a lot of fun as well. You can invite as few or many people as you want, and you can keep it for adults or invite younger partiers as well.

Whatever you decide to do this Halloween, these seven helpful hints can really make it possible for you to actually enjoy the holiday. Halloween can be a lot of fun if you're safe and focused on making the holiday a great time for all age groups.
